Change has taken place in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) program changing the program to a mandatory status. Effective January 1, 2016, the Florida Legislature and U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service have mandated that the SNAP E&T program return to mandatory participation by each ABAWD or Able-Bodied Adult without Dependents as determined by the state’s Department of Children and Families also known as DCF. This program will also be known as SNAP MN or SNAP Mandatory Employment and Training. When an individual applies for or is receiving Food Assistance benefits formerly known as food stamps, then DCF will review the applicant and determine the applicant to be an ABAWD referring ABAWD as a condition of receiving their Food Assistance benefits to the local CareerSource or American Jobs center for employment and training activities. In Pinellas County, CareerSource Pinellas provides a variety of services and oversees completion of an ABAWD’s mandatory hours.
